At the inaugural New York Open, Kevin Anderson bagged his fourth career ATP title, beating Sam Querrey in a thrilling, three-set final in Long Island.
Anderson has not always had the best of luck converting appearances in finals into tournament wins. He said “I‘ve been to quite a few finals and if it doesn’t go your way, it’s pretty tough to deal with. It means a lot to me that I was able to come through it today.”
Anderson played a flawless third-set tie-break, taking it 7-1 to finish the match 4-6. 6-3, 7-6(1) in 2 hours and 13 minutes. It was a long week for Anderson that saw him go to three sets in every match.
However, Anderson showed his class as the number one seed. This was his first title of the 2018 season, fending off the likes of Kei Nishikori and Frances Tiafoe.
Anderson has started the season strongly, leading to a career-high ranking of world number 8.
