Falling in love with the game

I first started playing squash when I was three years old. I’ve always been around the squash court because my dad was national champion in Peru. I’ve been watching him play since I was born.

My main motivation now is to be world number one in the Professional Squash Association (PSA). That desire to improve is what drives me. That’s what I love about tournaments, that feeling of being on court, fighting until the last point to see who comes out on top. That constant challenge is how you improve as a player.

Being a squash player in Peru was hard. Squash isn’t a very popular sport there and we don’t have much of a community. I always try to focus on doing things well every day with the support of my team and my sponsors.

My best so far

My proudest moment so far was when I broke into the PSA top 10 at the beginning of 2018. Hopefully I have more big moments to come.

Right handed

Family is really important to me. It’s my main motivation, without them it would be very complicated to reach my goals.

Day in. Day out.

Every morning I do one hour of squash and then an hour of gym time. Then an hour of fitness and play an hour of practice games in the afternoon.

My pro tip

The best advice I can give is to never give up, always fight until the end. No matter what happens. If you can do that, you can feel confident that you’ll always have the best chance to turn things around.

That’s how I try to motivate myself after a bad game or practice session. The most important thing is to learn from whatever mistakes I’ve made, then learn from those to focus on the next challenge.

That approach is similar to my favourite quote: “Dream it, wish it, do it.” With that determination, I try every day to become world champion.

It’s that focus on both the physical and the mental side of your game that really makes the difference. You should be prepared in both. The mental part plays a very important role. If you’re not mentally ready, it is very likely that the physical part will not work as well.

Staying grounded

It’s true that we have to travel a lot in our sport. What makes it easier for me is travelling with my dad. He is also my coach and that makes everything easier.

My dad is my role model. He’s always been there for me. I learned everything I know from him. Family is really important to me. It’s my main motivation, without them it would be very complicated to reach my goals.

Away from squash I like to watch and play tennis. It’s a nice break. I also like relaxing with some good entertainment on Netflix or going to the beach. It’s important to step away from sport every now and then.

The most important thing is to learn from whatever mistakes I’ve made, then learn from those to focus on the next challenge.
