It was another triumph for Ali Farag as he claimed a historic title in Chicago and became the World Champion for the very first time.
Just 24 hours after finally being announced the World No.1 Farag took on Tarek Momen, both men in the World Championships final for the first time. It was Farag who lifted the sport’s most iconic title after prevailing by an 11-5, 11-13, 13-11, 11-3 score line after an incredible 79 minutes of Squash.
It was almost the perfect fairy-tale as wife Nour El Tayeb also reached the final of the Women’s event in Chicago after she took out the World No.1 in the semi-finals. However, she then lost out to compatriot Nour El Sherbini 1-3. While she may not have won herself, Farag certainly considers her the driving force behind his victory.
“If, five years back, you had told me that I would be standing here holding the World Championship trophy, then no chance would I have believed you. As a senior at college, I never thought about going pro and the main driving force behind it is Nour. It sounds like a cliché, but find someone who lifts you up day in and day out, I’m deeply blessed to have her in my life, and she is the one who pushed me to go pro.
“Winning the World Championships is one thing, but winning it in front of this crowd is something else. Thanks to the Walter Family, it’s the biggest prize purse that’s ever been on offer in squash and it’s a huge honour.”
Dunlop is so proud to have Ali Farag and Nour El Tayeb as ambassadors for the brand and the sport itself. It was a fantastic Tournament in Chicago and an incredible achievement for the husband and wife pair to get as far as they did. Ali Farag, has suggested his ultimate goal is to be named the World No.1 come the end of the season and so there is still work to do.
